The moped licence theory test (AM/120): preparation and checklist

The theory test for the AM/120 moped driving licence has three sections. This guide explains the test structure, how to practise and a checklist for the official steps. The AM/121 driving licence for a light quadricycle is a different driving licence category.

The content applies to mainland Finland. It does not apply to Åland, which has its own road traffic legislation and its own driving licence authority.

Up-to-date sources

The 2026 regulations are taken into account

The T and AM/120 content has been updated to a source base in line with Traficom's theory test regulation 2026/8, which entered into force on 29 May 2026. The applicable EAS and training information takes into account regulation 2026/7, which entered into force on the same day.

The study material and practice questions cover the list of competence requirements for categories AM/120 and T, which is based on public laws and official regulations.

Teoriavalmis does not sell or provide EAS training.

Structure of the test

What is the moped licence theory test like?

The standard theory test is taken on a tablet, with 30 minutes to answer. You must reach the pass mark in each of the three sections.

  • Multiple-choice questions: 15 tasks

    At least 11 correct answers.

  • Picture questions on traffic situations: 50 tasks

    At least 43 correct answers.

  • Risk recognition: 5 tasks

    At least 4 correct answers.

The structure and pass marks are based on Traficom’s driving examination guidance and theory test regulation. Separate conditions apply to oral tests and extended answering time; you can find them in the official guidance.

Theory test practice

How should you practise for the theory test?

  1. Study one topic at a timeBefore doing the tasks, review the traffic rules for moped riders, priority, traffic signs and safe actions in the study material.
  2. Apply what you know to the taskRead the question carefully and identify the observations that determine the situation. Explain to yourself why you choose your answer.
  3. Read the explanation of the answerCheck the explanation even when you answered correctly. This helps you see whether your answer was based on a rule or a guess.
  4. Review a topic you are unsure aboutReturn to the study material and practise the difficult topic again. Finally, use a practice exam to review different topics together.

Official steps

What should I check before the test?

  • Check your age and documents

You can take the AM/120 theory test one month before your 15th birthday. Bring photo ID, your guardian’s consent if you are under 18, and an EAS certificate if you are obtaining your first driving licence.

  • Apply for or check your driving licence permit

A driving licence permit is an official prerequisite for proceeding to the test. Teoriavalmis does not apply for, process or check the driving licence permit on your behalf.

  • First driving licence: check EAS

For your first driving licence, you need EAS training consisting of four theory lessons from an approved trainer. Previously completed EAS training does not need to be repeated. Teoriavalmis does not provide EAS training or issue certificates.

  • Optional driving instruction

The AM/120 moped licence does not include compulsory driving instruction. If you would like optional driving instruction under a teaching permit, check the conditions with Traficom. EAS training cannot be completed as teaching-permit instruction.

  • Book the theory test

Once the official requirements are met, book the theory test through Ajovarma’s booking service. Teoriavalmis does not book theory tests.

  • Book the handling test

In addition to the theory test, the AM/120 examination includes a handling test, which you can take once you are 15 and have passed the theory test. Book through Ajovarma’s booking service. For the test, you need a moped that meets the requirements and suitable equipment. Teoriavalmis does not prepare you for the handling test.
