Why Teoriavalmis began
I am Esa, the founder of Teoriavalmis. Here I explain why I decided that there had to be a better way to practise driving licence theory.
It was quiet in the car
We drove home from the theory test with a second fail, and it was completely quiet in the car. My son had been practising for months, and still he blamed only himself.
I am Esa, and this is where Teoriavalmis began. At the end of 2025, my son was studying the theory for the tractor licence, in our case for a tractor ATV. He practised a great deal and passed the practice exam 87 times. That really should have covered everything.
He still failed the official test, and then failed it again. You cannot always get a theory test appointment straight away, so it all dragged on for several months. In between there were bookings, fees and nerves, and each time my son had to pull himself together again.
What he was actually practising
At home, doors were slammed. We parents tried to say that it was not that serious and that you can always try again. It was a hard situation, because he really had practised an enormous amount.
But we had not looked at what he was practising. Only our son used the material, and we parents did not even realise that the problem could be there. It was only after the second fail that we started to find out what the practice actually taught. Then it turned out that the test asked about things the practice had not taught. The fault was not with my son.
The motorway and the ATV
But what frightened me most was something else. By practising, someone could pass the test by chance without knowing the rules, and then things could go badly in traffic.
Take the motorway. A tractor ATV that is driven on a tractor licence must not go onto a motorway or a semi-motorway. The practice did not teach that. My son could have driven onto the motorway, and things could have gone very badly there.
The rule is in sections 58 and 99 of the Road Traffic Act. In Teoriavalmis it is one of the tractor licence theory questions.
It just cannot be like this
My son passed at the third attempt, once the practice taught the things the test asked about.
I thought that it just cannot be like this. There has to be a better way, and for our children's sake it has to be possible.
Starting from the requirements
I have been developing software for over 15 years, and I have a Master of Science (Technology) in software engineering. When we started looking into it after the second fail, I knew that these days I could build this.
In my work I always start from the requirements, and I approached this the same way: what does a licence holder have to know, be able to do and understand. The answers are in laws and regulations, both Finnish and EU, and there is no cutting corners on them.
The work began in May 2026 with the sources. I went through the Road Traffic Act, the driving licence legislation, Traficom's regulations and applicable EU legislation section by section before a single question existed. Every question is tied to a specific section of an act or a specific provision of a regulation.
The content can be checked in both directions. From a question you can get to its source, and from a source you can see which questions teach it. That way I can make sure that the practice teaches what the sources require and, when needed, show why a question was written.
The work goes on
This is not a one-off package. When a law or regulation changes, everything that depends on it has to be possible to update. That already happened this autumn. On 29 September 2026, Traficom repealed its regulation on the construction and equipment of mopeds and issued a new one to replace it, and I updated the content on 10 October 2026. I want parents to be able to trust that I have taken this seriously. I hope that a young person who studies these things knows the rules and can act safely in traffic.
